Aggie hoops roster fills out

Utah State’s basketball season is still a few months away from tipping off.

But the Aggies released their roster for the 2010-11 season and there are a few names of note on it.

Aside from the expected returners and announced signees, there are a handful of walk-on players with one standing out in a very big way.

Leland Miller, a 7-foot-2, 230-pound sophomore from Snow Canyon by way of Colorado’s Northeastern J.C., will be the tallest player ever to wear an Aggie uniform if he ever gets on the floor.

At Snow Canyon, Miller averaged just 6.95 points per game as a senior and saw extremely limited action at Northeastern JC. He will provide a tall defensive presence in practice, a source close to the USU basketball team said, but needs a lot of development before he’s ready to contribute.

Unlike the last 7-footer Utah State brought to Logan with fairly unimpressive statistics but plenty of potential, Miller has no significant baggage (i.e. bank robberies) coming with him. In fact, the source said, Miller will serve an LDS mission, probably leaving after the fall semester.

He is joined by guard E.J. Farris and swingman Brad Brown as walk-on players. Farris was at USU last year as a student, but sat out the season as a basketball player while getting his academics in order. The 6-2 combo guard from Newark, California will be a sophomore.

Brown, also has some experience in the USU system when the 6-6 forward from Orono, Minnesota, redshirted a season before serving an LDS mission.

At Orono, Brown averaged 13 points, 5 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.
