Bumpus commits to Utah State
Antonio Bumpus, a third-team All-American shooting guard from Harcum Community College in Philadelphia, must have liked what he saw over the weekend when he visited Utah State.
The high-scoring shooter originally from Columbus, Ohio, gave USU coach Stew Morrill a verbal commitment and will sign with the Aggies next week.
Bumpus averaged 18.3 points per game, 4.9 rebound per game, and connected on a school record 79 three point field goals for the Bears as they finished the season with a 26-3 record and were ranked No. 3 in the final junior college poll.
A source close to the USU basketball team said Bumpus will provide another valuable scoring option for the Aggies and help stretch defenses and give post players Tai Wesley, Nate Bendall and Brady Jardine a little more room inside when returning starters Pooh Williams and Tyler Newbold are off the court.
“He’s very good,” the source said. “We see him competing for minutes and giving us a lot more depth.”
Bumpus, a 6-foot-4, 190-pounder is a two-time third team JC All-American for Harcum, and was recruited by Binghamton, Wright State, St. Bonaventure and Drexel among others.
His committment may have an impact on the recruitment of Mesa (Az.) Community College star Stephen Rogers. The second-team All-American that holds an offer from USU and visited Logan a couple of weeks ago is scheduled to make recruiting visits to New Mexico and BYU in the next week or two before making a decision on which school he will attend.
