Moving on up, moving on
Much like George Jefferson, Utah State is moving on up.
The Aggies saw their RPI jump from 30 to 26 thanks to the 30-point drubbing they hung on Louisiana Tech — good thing the RPI computers don’t look at injuries to star players — and simply can’t be ignored for an at-large invitation if one is needed.
Playing New Mexico State (RPI of 57) is going to help it even more with a win, and won’t hurt it badly with a loss — case in point, BYU moved from 23 to 22 after getting beaten by UNLV (the Rebels were No. 50 before beating the Cougars but now sit at No. 42).
But in what is now becoming an annual item for discussion, Stew Morrill is already popping up as a candidate to replace a fired coach at a bigger school. This time, but certainly not for the only time this year, it’s Iowa. ESPN’s Andy Katz tweeted this about an opening that’s not even an opening yet: “If Iowa pops then Northern Iowa’s Ben Jacobson will get a great look and don’t be surprised to hear Utah State’s Stew Morrill’s name either.”
