Odds and Ends from Utah State
By now you should know about Cottonwood High’s Taani Fisilau committing to sign with Utah State when the February recruiting deadline hits.
Fisilau is a beast and will be a solid addition to the Aggies’ line when he begins playing in Logan. Perhaps most importantly, he represents an ‘in’ to the Cottonwood High program that has placed several Division I football players in recent years, but few at Utah State.
Also of note on the Aggie recruiting watch is the near miss of Berkeley, California’s Rickey Galvin — a lightning fast running back who is leading the East Bay’s high school scene with 1,773 yards and 23 touchdowns. Galvin had been offered by Utah State but recently committed to Washington State after visiting that school.
Switching sports, USU hoops season is here and senior point guard Jared Quayle is the only Utah player nominated for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award. Quayle joins 29 others including Notre Dame’s Luke Harangody and Duke’s Jon Scheyer.
As a junior, Quayle averaged 13.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game, while shooting 46.5 percent from the field, 38.8 percent from three-point range and 76.4 percent from the free throw line. He finished the year ranking third in the WAC in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.05), sixth in steals (1.43), sixth in assists, seventh in free throw shooting, 11th in scoring and 12th in rebounding.
On another basketball note, don’t expect to find the exhibition game with Trinity Western on the radio this Saturday. The game will be played at roughly the same time as USU’s football game at Hawaii. So if you want to follow Quayle and the Aggies, you’ll have to join 9,000 or more fans in the Spectrum
