Wow, that curse is real
When I wrote earlier this week about a ‘curse’ that has kept Utah State such a downtrodden state for so long I was just being silly and writing a light-hearted piece for the Halloween weekend.
I had no idea a curse would show up in Fresno in such a cruel way for the Aggies.
A 27-17 halftime lead for USU became a 31-27 loss as the Aggie offense — which had 503 yards against the Bulldogs — was shut out over the final two quarters of football.
It was just another tease for USU fans who like the fact the team is more competitive, but are desperate to see wins instead of losses.
Here’s how that loss, and the other games, shakes up my WAC rankings.
1. Boise State (8-0, 3-0) — Crushed San Jose State and is still the class of the conference. Nevada only team with a chance to beat them.
2. Nevada (5-3, 4-0) — Survived an upset bid from Hawaii and unleashed its amazing running attack. These guys are on a roll.
3. Idaho (7-2, 4-1) — Bowl-bound Vandals nearly upset at home by Louisiana Tech. But they won and are getting a few votes in the polls. Don’t expect it to last, though. Schedule gets brutal.
4. Fresno State (5-3, 4-1) — Nice defensive effort to stuff USU’s potent offense in second half. Have now won five in a row and will likely be headed to another bowl game. Mathews is an animal.
5. New Mexico State (3-6, 1-3) — Do I really think they’re this good? Not really, but they did beat USU and I’ll give them the edge for that.
6. Utah State (2-6, 1-3) — Close is only good when it’s dancing. So the Aggies’ close losses can’t feel that good. Still, USU is an offensive machine but needs to finish what it starts eventually.
7. Louisiana Tech (3-5, 2-3) — Blew it in Moscow. Blew it in Logan. Perhaps the most disappointing team in the league. Nice defense, but offense is shaky at best.
8. Hawaii (2-6, 0-5) — Warriors have lost six in a row and don’t look to be getting better despite an early lead in Reno. School’s probably looking for a good excuse to can the coach in a few weeks. Utah State visits this week, though.
9. San Jose State (1-6, 0-3) — The Spartans are done for the year. They’ve stopped being competitive and that doesn’t look good at all.
