Aggie soccer team predicted to win the WAC

After a spotless record in 2008, the Utah State soccer is not a surprise pick to repeat as WAC champs.

The Aggies finished last season with a 7-0-0 record and that success, coupled with a bunch of returning players, was enough to convince five of the WAC’s nine coaches to vote for USU.

Hawaii and Fresno State each got two first-place votes to land second and third in the preseason poll.

“I am honored with the respect that our conference peers have in us based on our performance last year and the players we have returning,” USU head coach Heather Cairns said of the preseason poll. “At the same time, we are focusing on looking ahead. The team reported for preseason camp today with the goal of being the best team come the end of the season. We know there is a lot of work to be done, and that there will be a very competitive race for the conference title this year.”

In addition to first-place prediction, four Aggies were named to the preseason all-conference team.

Forwards Shantel Flanery and Lauren Hansen are joined by midfielder Chandra Salmon and defender Lindsey Smart as all-WAC players according to the coaches.

The Aggies open the season August 21 at home against Northern Arizona.
