Utah State senior center Gary Wilkinson didn’t play high school basketball.
That’s not keeping the 6-foot-9, 240-pounder from South Jordan away from the ranks of the best college basketball players in the country.
Wilkinson was named to the prestigious Naismith Award watch list this week, which includes 50 of the NCAA’s best players. BYU’s Lee Cummard was also honored.
The preseason WAC player of the year, Wilkinson is averaging 17.3 points, 7.8 rebounds and shooting 64.3 percent from the floor. He is the target of frequent double teams on the low post and has added a mid-range jump shot to his offensive toolbox in an effort to escape the pounding down low.
A week ago, Wilkinson was also named as one of 30 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.
The Aggies, 8-1, host the Gossner Foods Duel in the Desert next week with Howard, Houston Baptist and Wyoming coming to town for three nights of basketball double headers.
